Pain by Dawson Cowals

Song Lyrics

Pain
by Dawson Cowals

Album: Live at the Solid Rock Cafe

Roadside crosses
Bedecked with flower garlands
I'm sure you've seen them
Silent testamonies of hearts broken by it
Or a three a.m. phone call
That could wake the dead
So the saying goes
You wish there was more than a ring of truth about it
Endless stream of cold winter rains
Headlines scream of innocence slain
How could a God of love refrain
From ending all this pain

Why is there so much of it?
If there's a God
Why doesn't he see fit
To rid the world of pain?
If it's all the same to you
I'd rather do without it

You say you don't need a God
To tell you what to do
You'd rather have the freedom
The power to choose
But if your choice is to hold
Any semblance of meaning
There must be consequence
Or forfeit to empty seeming
Just a puppet on a string
Might be the easier thing
Lest we face this harsh and bitter truth:
From our own hands comes this suffering

He loved us so much he let us choose
But we say he's never walked in our shoes
His back was scarred to carry our burdens
And yet, we'd rather avoid them from the outset
He promises to wipe away every tear
But we'd rather complain while we're here
