Album: Soli Deo
It may as simple as a backyard stick ball game
Or a fourth grade spelling bee
But there are moments in my lifetime when I've tasted victory.
The thrill of being number one words cannot describe
But how quickly it subsides, and I'm left with the reality
That most, if not the best of life is filled with second things.
The passion of my envy at times consumes my soul
As I strive, but lose the game
I swallow tears and whisper, "I'm a winner, just the same".
But there's no trophy on the wall, no token of esteem
Perhaps I'll never reach those dreams—
So I wrestle with the irony that most, at least the heart of life
Consists of second things.
The things I tend to overlook -
An easy chair, a book
Four walls, a roof above me
To walk beneath a clear blue sky
To watch a sparrow fly
To know someone who loves me.
I'm finding life so simple—there's nothing to achieve
But to love and live each day with a heart that's open
To receive the prize that's won by faith.
And all the dreams I never reached were never meant to be
'Cause what I'm meant to be is me
And who I am and what I really want the most
Is what I know in life to be the second things.
And who I am and what I really want the most
And what I love in life
Are so-called second things.
